Gap Year Advice For Worldwide Travel

If you are preparing to disappear around the world on a gap year adventure, finding cheap travel insurance, researching the laws of a country and drawing up an itinerary to give to friends and family are probably some of the furthest things from your mind, but they shouldn’t be. Gap years are all about adventure, building experience and getting some great memories, but a holiday that lurches from one disaster to another will provide adventure of a very different kind and give you the kind of memories that you’d rather forget! As a provider of cheap worldwide travel insurance, I’ve dealt with all kinds of claims from people who have run into trouble while on holiday; here are my top tips to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable gap year.

Get insured!

Single trip or annual travel insurance? Worldwide or for a specific destination only? There are plenty of options to consider when trying to get some cheap travel insurance for your year out, but remaining uninsured is not one of those options! From loss of belongings to missed flights, personal injury to cancellation costs, there are just too many things that could go wrong for it to be worth the risk of being uninsured.

When selecting your travel insurance make sure that it will cover you for all the activities you want to take, especially if you want to do some adventure travel. And if you are looking to make lots of smaller trips during your gap year rather than just one large one, consider investing in some cheap annual travel insurance the discounts can be significant.

Learn the laws and customs

Getting some comprehensive (but cheap!) travel insurance is an important first step to take when planning your gap year. Better still is making sure you won’t have to use it, and reading up on the laws and social customs of a country is one of the best ways of staying out of trouble. Many countries have very different attitudes to what you believe is normal behaviour get caught out and you can have a nightmare of a time trying to straighten things out. In many Arabic countries, for example, alcohol consumption can be a very serious crime, while in Thailand insulting the Thai royal family is a criminal offence. Make sure understand the cultural differences of any country you visit to avoid potentially dangerous gaffes.

Research where NOT to go

Understandably, most of your research before you go will be in trying to find the highlights of the countries you are visiting, but it is well worth swotting up on the holiday blackspots as well. Every city has rough parts that are worth avoiding, and in some countries there are entire regions that are no go areas for foreign travellers parts of Colombia and Pakistan for example. Stray into one of these blackspots and even your worldwide” travel insurance may be invalidated the Foreign Office website has a comprehensive list of the countries and regions where you shouldn’t go under any circumstances, so make sure your route doesn’t pass through any of them!

Avoid cowboy companies

Dodgy tour operators can cause serious headaches for both gap year travellers and the travel insurance providers who have to help clean up the mess they leave behind! Try and read some online reviews and word of mouth recommendations for any companies that you decide to go with, especially if you intend to take part in any potentially dangerous activities with them. The cheapest company out there won’t look like such a bargain when their shoddy equipment and under-trained staff land you in trouble!

Keep in contact

Keeping in touch with people back home may seem like a strange thing to give priority to while you are on a gap year, but it is worth it. Not only will it keep you on good terms with your worried parents and relatives, it will also allow you keep them updated with your itinerary so that they know where you are and what you are up to. This is especially important if you are going trekking or travelling away from civilization, so that if you go missing they’ll know to raise the alarm.

13 Funny Travel Insurance Stories Lucky For Some, Less So For Others!

Cheap travel insurance has a reputation of being quite a dull area to work in. While it does have its dull routine moments, just like any other job, these are made up for by the occasional inspired funny travel insurance stories you hear. It’s hard to say how many of them are either exaggerated, hugely embellished or just plain made up, but I still found a few of these travel insurance stories made me laugh while I was researching this article, and that’s good enough for me.

Here’s 13 funny travel insurance stories. While 13 is traditionally an unlucky number, a fair few on this list will consider themselves very lucky to be covered by understanding travel insurance companies! The remaining ones who were turned down will no doubt have learned an invaluable life lesson!

1. Cheeky Monkeys Cause Havoc

According to this tale (tail?), a group of cheeky monkeys conspired to ruin a couple’s romantic trip to Malaysia. Due to the heat, the couple left the window of their chalet open during the day while they went out, but regretted their decision when they returned to discover their clothes and belongings all over the surrounding resort and neighboring rainforest. The couple’s insurance company were thankfully understanding and ensured they did not need to keep re-wearing the same clothes for the remainder of their trip!

2. A LOT of Bombay Mix

You know Bombay Mix? The spicy Indian snack food. One traveler claimed to have lost 600 worth of the stuff on his way back from holiday, and tried to claim on his travel insurance. With Bombay Mix costing less than 1 per 250g bag, a conservative estimate is that the man would need to be carrying over 80 kilograms of the snack to have racked up 600 expenses! Quite hard to misplace, you’d have thought, and the travel insurance company agreed, refusing to pay the claim.

3. A sting in the tail

One traveler lost his wallet down a drain, while exploring Natalya in Israel. However, rather than filing a police report and contacting his travel insurance providers, the brave individual tried to fish his wallet out of the drain only to be stung by a poisonous scorpion which had made the area its home! The man’s treatment (and presumably his missing wallet) was covered by his travel insurance.

4. Geronimo!

Winning the dubious honor of the most unlucky on the list, this family’s camping trip went awry when a parachutist from the nearby airbase missed his target and landed squarely on the family tent. The camping equipment was ruined, and to add insult to injury, they were not covered for accidental damage so had to foot the bill themselves.

5. The joke’s on the burglar?

A fairly routine claim for a stolen cosmetics bag took an amusing twist when it was revealed that the victim had transferred her medical-strength haemorrhoid cream into an empty moisturizer tub earlier in the holiday. While French police remained on the lookout for a suspiciously smooth-faced thief, the woman’s travel insurance company paid up for the missing make-up, perfume and lotions.

6. Wrong airport, wrong country!

A man who claimed for a holiday cancellation when he was refused entry to a flight was turned down, when it emerged his flight wasn’t from Manchester in the North West of England, but Manchester, New Hampshire in the United States.

7. Some claims just aren’t worth the excess!

Here’s a tip for you if you have an excess you need to pay on a claim of 50, make sure your stolen possessions are worth at the very least 50.01! One traveler who had his bag snatched on holiday had his claim turned down, when it was established the complete inventory of contents was: 1x bottle of water, 1 x newspaper and 1 x packet of mints. No wonder his cheap travel insurance claim was rejected.

8. Criminals aren’t the only animals to ruin your trip

If you’re holidaying in the Black Forest, you may want to make sure you lock up properly when you leave the house. One family came back to their chalet to discover their home had been invaded by one hungry goat, which had proceeded to much his way through their wallets, passports and sandwiches. Their claim for new passports and wallets were rejected on the grounds of negligence in leaving the chalet wide open.

9. Coconut Shy

If you’re planning on relaxing under a tree in Sri Lanka, it’s worth checking your spot carefully, as one traveler found after being concussed by a falling coconut. The injury knocked her out, which may sound unlikely until you consider that the average fresh coconut weights 2 kilograms, and their trees grow up to 30 metres high. A coconut traveling at 53 miles per hour is no joke, and it’s unsurprising that the traveler was reimbursed the 400 medical bills.

10. Coconuts lost

On the other hand, others apparently cannot function without their coconuts: a couple returned from Mauritius to discover their local produce missing. Claiming for two lost coconuts may seem like a reasonable idea on paper, but with each one costing less than a pound to replace, and an initial excess on any claim made of 50, it’s no wonder the travel insurance providers turned this one down.

11. A what!?

Occasionally you hear of a claim for something that’s just completely baffling, and it was as such for Direct Line, who allegedly received a claim for a guitar made out of a pumpkin”.

12. A burning desire for a drink

At the ironically labeled ‘Fire Bar’ in Greece, one reveler paid the price for ‘needing a drink’ when she remained at the bar waiting to be served despite a loud buzzer and the rapid departure of others clamoring for a pint. Unsurprisingly, the buzzer turned out to be a fire alarm a fact which she finally appreciated when the flames engulfed the area. She escaped the scene with third degree burns and 300 of medical expenses to pay which her travel insurance company covered.

13. Someone’s fibbing!

Finally more of a fact than a funny travel insurance story, but its believed that there have been more claims for stolen 1000 Rolex Oysters watches than have been manufactured. It seems some people have been creative with their travel insurance claims…

How Fine Are The Cheap Travel Packages?

Many people think that the cheap travel packages don’t offer quality service, but they couldn’t be further from the truth. These offers are usually cheaper because more companies get together to make a really good offer to tourists. Smaller business from the travel industry and hospitality industry get together and offer complete vacations for very reasonable prices. The idea behind is to provide good quality prices at affordable prices so that they can please their clients and make a little bit of profit. Most of these deals however are addressed to the people who can be flexible in terms of their schedule.

Usually the best travel bargains can be found at the beginning of the season and at the end of the season. Traveling is usually done by bus, housing is provided in 2 or 3 star hotels and the meals are taken with the whole group in a single restaurant and include little or no alcoholic drinks. You will be surprised how many people take advantage of these offers. They are usually seniors or families with two or more children, but also single people or people who are on a budget but still want to have a memorable vacation.

Travel deals refer to flight deals, bus deals, housing deals, restaurant deals and almost everything else included in the tourism industry. And when all these deals come together to offer the tourist a nice affordable vacation, then one can get one of the best travel bargains of the season. These deals are offered before the summer season or the winter season, but sometimes when the tourism industry thinks the season is slow” they throw some of these bargains in to help the companies keep on the survival line and still be able to offer great services.

Most of these deals can be found online, but some of the travel agencies in your town might have deals like these too. If you want to get the best travel bargains, you have to do a complete research, to find out the best site where you can book a hotel if you cannot book the hotel directly. When traveling by plane remember that it is cheaper to travel during the midweek and not in the weekend, and if you can purchase such a ticket, you can say you got a bargain flight. It happens the same thing if valid for booking a hotel room or for renting a car if you need one to visit the surroundings.

People say cheap packages and bargain travel when they get a vacation package that still leave them enough money in their account or when they have more money from their vacation budget for having fun and still have quality services for themselves and their families. Cruise ships, family resorts, children camps, and many more branches of the tourism industry offer great travel bargains throughout the year. Some of these deals are offered so that new places can advertise their services and low prices compared to other places in the same area. Most of the time the smaller places or the not so known yet places are the ones that get involved in the vacation packages.

Some of these deals are in the big cities that have agreements with big corporations and don’t have too many rooms occupied in the weekend for example. The resorts usually offer their bargains during the weekdays because most of the people can travel during the weekends. The best travel bargains are usually offered when no major event happens in the area. In these periods and not only you might get free breakfast or free parking included in the accommodation price.

I’ve just done an experiment and I just saved an amazing $544.00 planning a discount Las Vegas vacation. It really shows how much money can be saved by spending time doing a few minutes research planning your holiday.

I went looking for the best Las Vegas hotel and air deal that I could find in under 10 minutes on the internet.

Here is a rundown of what I managed to do in under 10 minutes and how I saved $544.00.

I started off at one prominent Las Vegas website and got the following deal: Depart two adults San Antonio 30 September 2006, depart Las Vegas 6 October 2006; accommodation at Harrah’s hotel and flight included $776.50 per person – a total of $1553.00.

I then went to the Harrah’s website and it gave me accommodation for two adults for the same dates as above for a total of $1110.00, and that doesn’t include the flight price. That’s $550 per person just for accommodation at Harrah’s alone.

I then went to another website recommended in The 2006 Guide To Cheap Discount Vegas Vacations and it gave me a total cost for flight and Harrah’s accommodation of $593.50 per person (flight and accommodation included) for a total of $1187.00

I then went to another travel website and it gave me a total cost for flight and accommodation of $503.19 per person for a total cost of $1106.38.

If I had booked my vacation at the first website I went to I would have paid $544.00 more than I needed to pay.

In 10 minutes I managed to save an INCREDIBLE $544.00 ($272 per person) planning a Las Vegas vacation package.

All budget travellers can save that kind of money by using the same travel websites and travel search engines that I used to plan your Las Vegas vacation.

It’s not every day that anyone can earn $544.00 in 10 minutes so what are you waiting for?

It is possible to plan a cheap, discount Las Vegas vacation that will cost you next to nothing. Everything from cheap hotels, cheap airfares, cheap car rental. What A Travel Agency Provides For The Vacationer

Just as you have many different options when selecting where to travel and what to do when you get there, you also have a variety of choices when selecting the travel agency that will help you to design your perfect vacation. When you are looking for the perfect travel agency to help you with all of your travel needs, it is first important that you understand the basic types of travel agencies from which to choose and significant differences in terms of the services they provide to a vacationer.

Before looking at different niches of travel agencies, one large distinction exists. Do you want to work with an online-based travel agency, or a locally-based travel agency? Depending on how either type of travel agency is run, you can have a vastly different experience. With an online-based travel agency, you can often receive service 24/7 and book your travel at any time that is most convenient to you. You will be able to retrieve information from many online-based travel agencies “on demand,” or exactly when you request it.

With a locally-based travel agency, you can often form relationships with particular travel agents who will also be your main point of contact for any future travel that you plan. In addition, the agents in your locally-based agency will be able to maintain information specific to your desires to help them to provide suggestions for future vacations. These are only a few of the distinctions between online and local travel agencies.

One recent innovation great for the customer is the emergence of travel agencies who provide both of the above – the personal service of a local, walk-in office with the 24/7 and technological convenience of online access to all your itineraries, account information and options for self-service booking when you want it. Look for a national brand with a history of providing reliable service and customer satisfaction; these companies are most likely to provide you with the best of both worlds in travel agency services.

Once you have determined whether you will use an online or a local travel agency, there are additional options from which to choose. The first option to consider is the level of service an agency will provide. Travel agencies can run the gamut from full service to self service. Especially with online travel agencies, information may simply be provided to aid in your travel decisions while leaving much of the leg work to you. If you prefer a travel planning experience that allows you to seek out all of your own information and make all of your decisions and reservations independently, a self service travel agency will be your best bet.

Full service travel agencies, whether online-based or locally-based, offer the exact opposite scenario. They pair an agent with you to provide all of the information you need, when you need it, and to be on hand to help you with all of the travel decisions that you make. In addition, they will handle all of your bookings and payments and logistics, sparing you the need to do so on your own. In between self service and full service agencies are other options that offer a combination of do-it-yourself plans and planning that involves the step-by-step guidance of a travel professional.

The second option is the type of travel an agency may designate as their specialty. Some travel agencies work only with domestic travel planning. They can assist you with any need you may have related to travel within the United States and its possessions. Other travel agencies work specifically to aid travelers in planning overseas travel. A further narrowing of this niche can occur when a travel agency focuses only on one particular area of the world for the travel services they provide, such as Europe or the Caribbean. You can also choose travel agencies that focus only on one particular type of travel, such as cruises or multi-segmented trips. It can be very important for you to decide whether you would like to partner with a niche travel agency, or a travel agency that is more broad-based.

The third option is the type of traveler an agency may specialize in assisting. Some travel agencies only work with a specific demographic of travel. For instance, you may choose a travel agency that caters to single travelers. This type of agency may work to put together travel packages and tours specifically geared towards singles instead of couples or families. Other travel agencies may work with just that – couples or families. Whether they focus on providing romantic destination options for two, or kid-friendly destinations for the whole family, this can be a popular niche for travel agencies. Finally, a travel agency may choose to focus exclusively on business travelers instead of leisure travelers. They may have options available to offer that are particularly suited to travelers who need different amenities and more flexibility in scheduling.

In conclusion there are many services a travel agency provides to make your life easier when planning a vacation or business travel. Most importantly, the agent offers years of expertise and knowledge of other travelers’ experiences from which you can benefit.

Advantages Of Working With A Travel Agency

If you are interested in booking a vacation, you have two main choices. You can do the work yourself, or you can choose to work with a travel agent. Although many people think they will save time and money by doing the work themselves, it is the opposite that is usually true. The next time you plan a vacation, you should consider the following benefits to working with a travel agent.

Travel agents know the best days to travel.

When working with a travel agent, you are dealing with someone who not only books dozens (or even hundreds) of vacations every year, but also someone who probably travels often him or herself. Travel agents understand the best days to travel from a budget perspective, as well as from a time perspective. If your dates are flexible, a travel agent can help you find the cheapest, most hassle-free options.

Save money on flights, hotels, and other types of reservations.

Almost all travel companies offer group rates. The problem is, when you travel with your family, you likely will not have enough people to get that group discount, even if you travel with a big family. With a travel agent, you will get the discount because they buy tickets in bulk. You may also get a discount simply because travel professionals get special discounts through professional affiliations.

It takes virtually no work when you let a travel agent plan your vacation for you.

Although you should still do a little research in order to know what questions to ask your travel agent and to make wise decisions on your travel options, you should have to spend little or no time dealing with the details of final booking and other preparations. You will save hours and hours of time!

Travel agents can answer travel document questions.

Laws regarding visas and passports are constantly changing. Although you typically still have to go through the application process yourself, your travel agent can make sure that you understand important deadlines and answer your logistical questions.

You might get insider perks with travel agents.

Some vacation options and travel perks might only be available for people who book with a travel agent. In short, travel agents know the right questions to ask. For example, if you are a newlywed and book through a travel agent, they might be able to get you a honeymoon suite for the same price as a regular room. Travel agents know how to reap the most benefits when booking vacations.

Travel agents can answer questions about your destination.

Chances are that your travel agent (or someone in his or her office) has been to most of the common travel destinations. That means that they should be able to answer your questions about the vacation. From the best restaurants to what to expect when traveling around town on public transportation, travel agents know how to answer your vacation questions.

Travel agents can recommend travel options that are more affordable.

One of the most common reasons for people not traveling more often is that travel is expensive. You might want to travel to a foreign tropical island paradise, for example, on a shoestring budget. Your travel agent can suggest a domestic sunny location, which gives you longer vacation options on your budget.

Kid-friendly travel is much easier with using a travel agent.

There are many challenges to traveling with children, especially young children. Travel agents can help you to deal with these problems. Remember, they book trips for families all of the time. Along the same lines, they can also help solve problems traveling with pets, senior citizens, or disabled individuals.

When your travel plans change, a travel agent can help you deal with these problems.

Things do not always go as planned. When this happens and you have reserved the various portions of your trip by yourself, you have dozens of calls to make, changing dates and trying to save as much money as possible. When working with a travel agent, you only have one call to make. Better yet, the travel agent might be able to get your dates of travel changed or get you a partial refund whereas alone, you might have simply lost the money.

You have a single bill to pay with a travel agent.

Instead of making a ton of small purchases with multiple receipts, confirmation and reservation numbers, you will have one big bill to pay. Better yet, most travel agents have payment plans, in which you pay a certain amount each month until your date of travel. They might even have financing plans to make things easier. With a travel agent, vacations can be stress-free from a financial perspective, on top of all of the planning perks.

Using a travel agent, online or in-person, to plan and reserve your next vacation has many advantages over doing it yourself. You do not have to go it alone to save time and money. In fact, not using a travel agent can cost you more dollars and headache than you would have had you chosen the services of an experienced travel agent.
